An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a small, self-contained residential unit built on the same property as a larger home. ADUs are also known as "granny flats" or "mother-in-law apartments" because they are often used to house extended family.

Attached ADU are connected to the main house, and they may share some walls and utilities. This type of ADU is often converted from an existing space, such as a garage or attic.

Detached ADU
Detached ADU are built separately from the main house, and they have their own entrance and interior. This is the most common type of ADU, and it is often referred to as a backyard cottage or granny flat.

Conversion ADU
Conversion ADU are created by converting an existing space in the main house, such as a basement or attic, into a separate living unit. This type of ADU is often the least expensive to build, but it may require the most renovation work.
